Examples of Protective Hair Coverings
I had to scroll through unreasonable amounts of white people for this. Oh, Google.
Durag
Silk Bonnet
Silk Scarf
youtube
Loc Socks
Okay, I admit. I've been using loc sock and loc bonnet interchangeably bc I've worn both and I know what I mean, but I cannot do that anymore.
Different styles will require different night time protective care! If your Black character has a silk press, she may choose to wrap her hair in a scarf. If they've got long locs or braids, a long silk bonnet will be better. A teeny weeny afro? A short bonnet will suffice, or they might even go bare. These are far from the only methods! We have oodles of options on how we maintain specific styles. Black hair care requires effort! Research and pick one!

nurturing my natural self (part 4)
Disclaimer: I made this, like all my other posts, for myself, but if you are reading this, I'm not a doctor, and this is basic researched knowledge. If you realize that you need help, please seek a doctor!
Allowing Your Hair to Recover
Nurturing your hair is just as important. This allows your natural hair to breathe and thrive. While protective styles like braids, wigs, and weaves can be great, they can also harm your hair if you don't give it a break. It's crucial to find a routine and products that work for your hair type and porosity.
I want to grow my hair out so I can wear it more often, but I’ve struggled to find styles that suit my current length after chopping off my dead ends. Cutting those damaged ends felt like a weight lifted off my chest! I’m investing in my hair care and currently have a protective style in, but I’ll switch back to my natural hair once it’s out.
I’ve found more styling ideas on TikTok, which helps since it can be tough to find looks for my length. My hair is a bit longer than the TWA (teeny weeny afro) stage and is growing well. The health of my hair is very important, and I plan to continue adding to my routine.
- Nutrients: Protein: Essential for hair structure (lean meats, fish, eggs, legumes). Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Support scalp health (fatty fish, walnuts, flaxseeds). Vitamin A: Promotes sebum production for a healthy scalp (carrots, sweet potatoes). Vitamin C: Supports collagen production and iron absorption (citrus fruits, berries). Biotin: A B-vitamin crucial for hair growth (eggs, nuts, avocados). Vitamin E: Improves blood circulation to the scalp (nuts, seeds, leafy greens).
- Hydration: Drink plenty of water to keep your hair and scalp hydrated.
- Scalp care: Cleansing, exfoliation & massage: using a gentle shampoo, keep your scalp clean to prevent build-up, which can hinder growth. occasionally exfoliate your scalp to remove dead skin cells and promote circulation (started using aztec clay, 10/10 so far, loving it). massage your scalp to stimulate blood flow and promote hair growth.
- Moisturizing Oils: jojoba, argan, grapeseed & avocado oil. These help hydrate hair by adding moisture and nutrients. Apply these oils to damp hair to hydrate it, either as part of a deep conditioning treatment or after washing.
- Moisture-Sealing Oils: castor oil, coconut oil, olive oil, avocado (serves as both) & shea butter. These create a barrier to lock in moisture and prevent dehydration. Use these after applying a moisturizing oil or treatment to lock in the hydration, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends of the hair. I don't use these much if at all unless I'm focusing on the ends of my hair because of my scalp condition.
- Heat Management: If you’re using heat, always protect your hair. Heat protectants are a must to prevent damage from styling tools. Try to minimize heat use overall or stick to low-heat settings.
- Detangling: a major part of healthy hair care. Always use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers (if using both, then use your fingers first), and make sure your hair is wet with conditioner to prevent breakage.
- Seasonal Hair Care: your hair’s needs can change with the seasons. In the winter, it might need more moisture, while summer humidity might require lighter products.
- Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Choose sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners to avoid stripping natural oils. reduce or avoid harsh chemical treatments (e.g., relaxers, dyes) that can weaken hair.
- Protective styling: using low-manipulation styles to protect your ends (braids, twists) can help prevent breakage. styles that are too tight can lead to traction alopecia.
- Hair care ingredients: it's important to find what works for you. what works for kayla may not work for kiara, yk? for example, i've read and heard about others who benefitted from Coconut oil, shea butter, castor oil, jojoba oil, rosemary oil, and mint oil are examples of hair care ingredients known for their nourishing, moisturizing, and growth-stimulating properties. While not all of these oils are beneficial for managing my seborrheic dermatitis, certain ones, like jojoba oil and rosemary oil, have been especially helpful in controlling flare-ups.
- Routine: Find a fitting routine for your type and porosity. A general one is: shampoo + condition + rinse + leave in + style OR shampoo + deep condition + rinse + leave in + style . People include pre-poo (pre-shampoo) to detangle, some people even condition their hair before deep conditioning. this can actually cause your deep conditioner to be less effective. my current routine to which pre-pooing will be added: detangle with water + shampoo/aztec clay mask w acv + deep condition + rinse + leave-in conditioner + blow-dry on low heat. this is to prep my hair for like braids or something but if i was doing a wash n go, i wouldn't bow dry, i'd style with either a curl custard and gel or a hair butter (to lock int he moisture) + gel since i already used leave-in.
- Trims, Patience, and Stress Management: Regular trims are necessary to keep split ends at bay. Managing stress and getting enough sleep can make a huge difference in your hair’s health. And remember, patience is key—healthy hair growth takes time!
Some ingredients to beware of:
- Sulfates (e.g. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate): Strips natural oils, causing dryness.
- Parabens (e.g. Methylparaben): Preservatives that may disrupt hormones.
- Silicones (e.g. Dimethicone): Can build up on hair, leading to dullness.
- Alcohols (e.g. Isopropyl alcohol): Drying effects on hair.
- Formaldehyde (e.g. DMDM Hydantoin): Can cause irritation and allergic reactions.
- Artificial Fragrances: Can irritate sensitive skin and cause allergic reactions.
- Harsh Detanglers (e.g., Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Cetrimonium Chloride): Can strip moisture and cause buildup.
Hair Care Essentials
- clarifying shampoo (deeply cleanses to remove buildup, excess oil, and impurities. Ideal for occasional use to refresh hair but can strip natural oils with frequent use.)
- hydrating shampoo (gentle cleansers that don’t strip natural oils; look for hydrating formulas.)
- co-wash (cleansing conditioner that helps remove dirt while maintaining moisture, suitable for regular use. i.e. when you wanna wash your hair but it's too soon use shampoo bc you don't wanna dry it out)
- conditioner (moisturize and detangle hair after shampooing.)
- blow dryer (better than air drying, esp useful for when you're doing styles that require dry hair)
- spray bottle (refresh, dampen, moisturize)
- plastic cap (to hold your hair when you put hair masks on)
- leave in conditioner (retain moisture and detangle hair.)
- deep conditioner/hair mask (Used weekly or bi-weekly to provide intense moisture and repair. choose one best suited to your hai-- what your hair needs the most in the moment)
- hydrating creams & oils (shea butter, coconut oil, or argan oil to nourish and moisturize.)
- natural oils: coconut oil, olive oil, jojoba oil, or castor oil can help seal in moisture, add shine, and promote hair growth.
- essential oils: tea tree oil, lavender oil, and peppermint oil can help with scalp health and stimulation.
- curl creams or gels: defining curls, providing hold, and reducing frizz.
- edge control & brush sleek edges and maintaining hairstyles.
- hair mousse: volume and lightweight hold.
- wide-tooth comb: for detangling without causing breakage & combing out.
- detangling brush: for detangling (denman, unbrush etc)
- fine-tooth comb: sectioning and parting hair
- satin or silk scarves/bonnets/pillowcases: protect hair from friction while sleeping, reducing frizz and breakage.
- hair clips and bands: sectioning hair during styling and care routines.
- heat protectant spray or cream: if you use heat styling tools (like flat irons or blow dryers) to protect your hair from damage.
- trimming tools: scissors handy for regular trims to remove split ends and encourage healthy growth.
- scalp massager: promote blood circulation and stimulate hair growth.
- scalp Treatments: tea tree oil for dandruff or other scalp concerns.

UA’s Ice Queen
————————
Summary: Y/N is known as the ice queen of UA, and not just for her quirk. She’s ice cold to any and everyone, with a few exceptions.
Characters: Tamaki Amajiki, black!fem!reader
Word count: 406
Warnings: none just fluff all around for Tamaki 💜🐙
Pairing: Tamaki Amajiki x black!fem!reader (established relationship)
Note: Y/N has a twa (Teeny Weeny Afro) in this piece.
Note 2: This piece for Tamaki is long overdue but I hope you all enjoy it!
Tag list/mutuals list: @olenoname @mysticpisces
————————————
Underneath a beach umbrella, Y/N sat, content to scroll on her phone mostly her feeds for Instagram and Pinterest. The weather was humid which made her hairstyle perfect for it. Lifting her eyes from the screen of her phone, just for a brief moment, she could see everyone playing in the water.
Even Tamaki.
She could easily pick him out of the crowd filled with women, men, children, and other students from UA who also came to the beach for a rest and relaxation day.
He was with Mirio and Nejire.
The three of them deserved a day like this. No stress. Just fun.
Ping! New message!
💜🐙Tamaki🐙💜: I can feel you staring.
Y/N: Do you want me to look away?
💜🐙Tamaki🐙💜: No!
💜🐙Tamaki🐙💜 is typing…
💜🐙Tamaki🐙💜: What I mean is, I like it when your attention is focused on me.
Y/N: Then I’ll make sure to give you all of my undivided attention later.
💜🐙Tamaki🐙💜 is typing…
💜🐙Tamaki🐙💜: Y/N-chan! It’s Nejire! I think you broke Tamaki!
Y/N: I’ll come down there and reboot him.
💜🐙Tamaki🐙💜: And when you get down here, can you make some ice for us? Pleaseee?
Y/N was known as UA’s ice queen not just because of her natural cold disposition but also because the ice that formed when she used her quirk could last for hours because of how unique it was. Which was perfect for this humid weather where the sun could easily melt regular ice.
💜🐙Tamaki🐙💜: Pretty please! Think of your kouhai! 🥺
Y/N might be cold but she was by no means heartless.
Y/N: Alright. Alright, I’m on my way.
💜🐙Tamaki🐙💜: Yay! 😃
Standing up and getting out from underneath the umbrella and stretching as she felt the warmth of the sun from above and the sand beneath her feet, Y/N began to make her way down the beach.
This really was a day of relaxation.

Here go!
I appreciate it, chief!
Ice's Petty Gripes with Apollo's Design
Okay so I'm not gone argue, if you disagree, just scroll on or block me. It's not that deep overall.
While his skin isn't as greenish as it usually is with desaturation issues, it still looks flat to me. I've seen that the art style has been updated though, so hopefully this is not an issue by the game release. Giving them a chance 👍🏾
His hair 😭😭 omfg I'm sorry. I just... It reminds me of back when we used to have games that would let you change the skin color of your model (gasp! So inclusive!) but the hairstyles were still limited to white people textures that sat awkwardly. We're past that. It's 2024. This could have been twists, freeform locs, a frohawk, or- my personal favorite, as he's symbolic of the sun at some point- an AFRO! Even a teeny weeny afro with some cute curl definition would have favored his facial structure!
If he'd been literal grey like his brother Ares, or white like his sister Artemis, I wouldn't have cared. But I think my general issue is the lack of commitment to defining Black features in art, and I think this one was just the straw that broke the camel's back for me lmao (I was already mad about Patroclus, but I overlooked it, kinda thought they'd learn from that).
We are not white; you have to consider that when you're designing us. We aren't painted the exact same way. We don't look like white people; lmao an entire sociological construct was invented to drive that point home in every aspect of our lives, but somehow we forget as soon as it's time to put paint to paper? And Supergiant is not some lone fanartist or crowd funded team. These are creators that have made excellent games and have excellent designs for the majority of their characters!
Now this is not me saying that they're bad people. They're not. I adore Hades! I just... I personally feel I have the right to expect better from games atp. This design is mid, from people capable of producing heat. I shouldn't have to settle for "well, at least they're Black" in 2024. And so I'm not 🤷🏾♀️ If you're gonna do a Black/Brown character, wholly commit to the design! I feel this way about EVERY medium that drops Black characters, in more ways than one (I have an entire blog about it lmaooo).
So yeah, it's not *that* deep on its own, I'm just not bout to call something hype when it's not. But I'm also not gone stop anybody else from playing or anything lmao.
#i made this far nicer and was far more gracious#see im capable of it!#but these were the things i couldnt move on#so if i ever draw this man expect better hair texture#and luscious browns

i need help with figuring out how to get a haircut!!! my mom doesn't want me to cut my hair and her reason is that it will poof out and become harder to take care of (i have curly hair that does the shrinkage thing so it is kinda correct) except the haircut i want to get is basically just getting all of it off (i believe it's called twa or teeny weeny afro) so i can see how it will grow as time goes on and what length will be right for me
do any of you all who follow our transmasc experience have any ideas on how to convince my mom 😭 my hair goes all the way to my waist and i hate taking care of it so much because it takes hours out of my day and i don't even like it! whenever i see anyone with super short curly hair i get so jealous and sad and it needs to stop!
i’m gonna be honest with you. that’s probably not her real reason. i have argued for hours and hours with my mom over my hair. her original argument was that she didn’t want it to poof out but the more i disproved her arguments she eventually admitted that she just didn’t want me looking like a boy.
poke through her arguments. tell her exactly what you want. she will either give in or tell you the real reason she’s so hesitant. if you can, try getting your hair cut shorter but not THAT short to create a less drastic change. then, if you want, go shorter from there.
best of luck, dude!

My favorite unique physical trait of Ruixiong's is his large/long earlobes. They are, sadly, seldom clearly visible due to his hair, though.

THE WEP'S LAST COMPETITION OF THE YEAR, OVER TO YOU, DECEMBER 2023, THE SCREENWRITER By Pat Garcia @WEP, @TheIWSG, #writingcontest, #flashfiction @pat_garcia
Tagline: Last week’s question about her short, teeny-weeny-afro (TWA) almost caused her to explode and show him that she had muscles. She was ready to give him her Ali left punch and knock him out. Esther Mae Brodie, a chubby-sized, dark-skinned forty-two-year-old woman Expat living in Helsinki, didn’t care too much for C.J. Laine. The 5-foot-nine-inch Finnish man with a head full of light…

This post basically describes half of my living, breathing life as a Black woman. It's not that you MUST plan every hairstyle. It's the alchemical magic of Black hair and the plethora of incredible styles we can do with our hair that makes planning for events fun and stressful all at the same fucking time. Also, weather is a factor as well; will it be sweltering hot that my twa (teeny weeny afro) will sizzle in the sun so bad that I'll look like I have a Sisko (the thong song) Ceaser cut? What if it's too windy outside and decide to wear this bomb lace front wig- do I have time to get it installed or should I Diy it with some Got2be freeze spray and hope for the best. But one thing I will say, 99.9% of Black women won't used Gorilla Glue on any part of our hair, scalp, edges, sideburns- they don't sell Gorilla Glue at the beauty supply store. Don't even ask me how that girl thought a industrial strength adhesive used at construction sites called GORILLA GLUE was for Black women's hair. Side bar: Yes I know Gorilla Snot exists- I use it but it's not a 'Black hair product'. I've bought it at my local bodega, Target and Shoprite. A lot of different race of people use Gorilla Snot. Unfortunately, the only person in the entire fucking world who thought using Gorilla Glue as a hold for a slick side pony was a Black woman- I guess we have to make history however we can. 🤷🏾♀️

Have they always had the same physical appearance, or have you had to edit how they look?
Uncommon Questions for OCs and their creators:
Oh, I had to edit how they look MANY TIMES throughout the years.
The only one who retained the same physical appearance from Day 1 is Abena as a tall, voluptuous, dark-skinned booba lady with a teeny weeny afro, hypnotic smile, and big alluring eyes. The only change I think I did since her original design was define her jawline and cheekbones, and even then that was just me being a better artist and not just drawing her as a generic anime girl with toned in skin. I guess updating her outfit and changing how she covers her hair counts.
The men, on the other hand:
Josep was initially significantly young, leaner, and had a different hairstyle (rounded hairline with bangs and a ponytail). His face was also smoother. As my art improved, he'd eventually gain the sharp cheekbones, defined jaw, and unique eyes, as well as a bulkier physique to compliment his spooky theme. It's actually fairly recently (the past few years) his hair was most defined: slicked back with a few stray strands and a widow's peak hairline with trepanning scars on his skull. The braided queue slung over the shoulder like an anime mom's side plait is perhaps the most recent change (because I'm sick of trying to decide how his hair falls over his flipped cloak collar), as well as self-flagellation scars on his back because Catholicism, yo.
Rashid also had a major change. Like Josep, he was initially younger, almost identical to Amir but with the stereotypical genie look (so a shaved head with a ponytail, smaller beard, etc). That was why Rashid's original name was "Jinni"! Then later one he was made middle-aged and thoroughly bald, with a fuller beard and body hair everywhere, and a hooded cloak. Later still changed his physique to be "strong fat" to contrast the Adonises that fill up the Devil's Eye roster lmao (others also fattened up like Robert and Isaac). His hooded cloak is also changed to a general assymetrical cloak styled after Cassim from Aladdin and the Forty Thieves. Most of the recent changes onto Rashid nowadays is just defining and redefining how I draw his face and his beard. God, his beard is hard.
Ruixiong's physical design is mostly on just his hair and face. In one of his earliest drafts, Ruixiong was originally a very disabled beggar with a shitton of congenital deformities who was approached by the Master to be made abled and beautiful… only to have half of his face burned and an eye gouged out by Sing-Lung (hence the strap of cloth under his hair in some of his icons). But this is absolutely gross writing so VERY THANKFULLY it is dropped; however, Ruixiong was without a justification as to why he often covers half of his face with his hair for a long time until recently--he just has a birthmark on his face he thinks is hideous lmao. Which I eventually adjusted too--his attitude about that birthmark evolved to something he finds ugly but also prideful over, thus his reluctance to keep it covered dropped and his full face shown more often altogether. So the peek-a-boo bangs is just stylization nowadays.
Also, the top knot. Ruixiong previously didn't have the Ming-dynasty styled top-knot. That's also a recent change to his physical appearance. Ruixiong feels weird whenever I draw him without it now.
Phoebus and Guy are a special case, and I'm lumping them together as identical twins. Initially they WEREN'T twins: Phoebus was originally 23 and Guy 21 before I decided upon making them twins and moving them to 22. They also had different hairstyles; Guy was thoroughly white with weird stylized shapes while Phoebus had the symmetrical auburn Sephiroth bangs. Upon deciding to make them identical (barring Guy's white hair at the time), I altered Guy's hair to have Phoebus' shape and Phoebus' face to be just like Guy's (Phoebus' face was originally much more significantly "generic anime bishonen").
Originally the only way you could tell them apart, besides their personalities, was their color scheme--otherwise, left uncolored, you weren't supposed to be able to tell who is who at all. But this also changed over time. Guy nowadays has muscle, and he dresses more formally or "sexily", whereas Phoebus is a skinny twig and dresses like a lazy slob. There is also Phoebus with the birthmark on his elbow as the congenital trait that distinguishes him from Guy.
Special mention goes to Guy's hair, which has gone all over the place from full white to auburn to the current auburn with a single white streak. I am contemplating one more physical change to Guy, but I am still deciding if it's a good change or not first.
Giovanni's radical design changes is mostly on his hair. He had a really stupid looking ponytail with the Idiot Hair string plus sideburns and… all over the place. Later it became a slicked back wavy shoulder-length hair but still with the Idiot Hair strand sticking out on top of his head. Then that Idiot Hair relaxed and covered his right eye for a time as I changed the hair once again to have assyemtrical parted long bangs wherein his right eyebrow tends to be covered. Finally, that Idiot Hair was dropped altogether as I gave Giovanni his trademark sideburns instead, a decision I'm glad to have because I'm so sick of his cutesy face being so bland otherwise (the sideburns make him appear more masculine without changing his face).
Giovanni's heterochromia was entirely by accident--he was originally just blue eyed. But before I boarded the plane to go to the Philippines for college, I had an unfinished drawing of Josep smacking Gio on the head for stupids, and only one eye (blue) was colored. The other (green) was colored on the plane, but it was dark and I picked up the wrong Sharpie. When the lights brightened and I saw my mistake, I decided to keep it. And that is why Gio has two differently colored eyes!
The last major change to his physical design is probably a couple years ago, regarding the massive number of scars on his body due to self-harm during psychotic episodes in the cellar.

okay okay. Glory keeps the teeny weeny afro because I feel like it's necessary for her overall look. Hobie starts with his 60s 'do and but I'll probably have him switch to spider verse esque locs later. Mindy has relaxed hair. Randy gets twists and Miles whenever I get to his addition will have his comicverse fade; that would be in the late 2010s regardless
it's fun to be into comic book fashion and pick apart other people's costuming until I'm driving myself nuts over styling decisions in my own 'verse
#the less often a character appears the more inconsistent their hair gets. Makes picking a style HARD#oliverspidey#don't reblog this addition this is just me talking to myself
